Punakha Dzong (Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang, Palace of Great Happiness)

Punakha Dzong, meaning “Palace of Great Happiness or Bliss,” is arguably the most magnificent and historically significant dzong in Bhutan, strategically built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Constructed in 1637-38 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and remains the winter residence of the Central Monastic Body. Its immense size, whitewashed walls, and intricate woodwork are awe-inspiring, especially when viewed against the backdrop of the surrounding jacaranda trees that bloom purple in the spring.

This majestic fortress has witnessed many pivotal moments in Bhutanese history, including coronations and the signing of important treaties. It houses sacred relics of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, including the sacred remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Visitors are captivated by its grandeur, the peaceful atmosphere of its courtyards, and the profound sense of history that permeates every corner, making it an architectural marvel and a spiritual heartland.
