Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Gonpa)

Gangtey Monastery, or Gangtey Gonpa, is a significant and visually striking Buddhist monastery located on a ridge overlooking the vast and beautiful Phobjikha Valley. It is the largest Nyingmapa monastery in Bhutan and holds deep spiritual significance, being the ancestral home of the Pema Lingpa tradition. The current monastery was built in the 17th century by Gyalse Pema Thinley, the grandson of the great treasure revealer Pema Lingpa.

The monastery boasts impressive architecture, including a large central lhakhang (temple) and various monastic residences. It serves as a spiritual center for the community, where monks reside, study, and perform rituals. The monastery also hosts the annual Black-necked Crane Festival. Visiting Gangtey Monastery offers a serene experience, allowing insights into Bhutanese monastic life, Nyingmapa traditions, and provides unparalleled views of the Phobjikha Valley.
