Chendebji Chorten

Chendebji Chorten is a large, distinctive stupa located approximately 41 kilometers west of Trongsa, near the road that leads from Wangdue Phodrang. Built in the 18th century by Lama Shida, a Tibetan Lama, it is notably patterned after Kathmandu’s famous Swayambhunath Stupa, featuring eyes painted at the four cardinal points. Legend has it that the chorten was constructed to subdue a dreaded demoness, Nyala Duem, who was terrorizing travelers and locals in the area, and its location marks the spot where her remains are believed to be buried.

This impressive white stupa stands at an elevation of 2,430 meters and is adorned with a traditional prayer wheel house. It serves as an important pilgrimage site and a landmark for travelers journeying between eastern and western Bhutan. The serene setting and the chorten’s unique architecture make it a popular stop for both its religious significance and its picturesque qualities.
