Burning Lake (Membartsho)

Membartsho, famously known as the “Burning Lake,” is a sacred and mystical pool located on the Tang Chhu river in the Tang Valley of Bumthang. Despite its name, it is not actually burning but is considered holy due to its association with the great Bhutanese terton, Pema Lingpa. In the late 15th century, Pema Lingpa is said to have plunged into this lake holding a butter lamp, emerging with a statue of Buddha and a sacred scroll, with the lamp still burning, thus earning its name.

The site is marked by prayer flags and small shrines, and the serene beauty of the river and surrounding forest adds to its spiritual ambiance. It is a highly revered pilgrimage spot where devotees offer butter lamps and prayers. Visiting Membartsho offers a unique insight into Bhutanese spiritual beliefs, folklore, and the enduring legacy of its revered saints.
