Uncover the magic and mystery of beautiful Bhutan.
Jakar Dzong, meaning “The Castle of the White Bird,” is a strategically important and visually striking fortress perched on a ridge overlooking the Chamkhar Valley in Bumthang. Built in 1667 by the Trongsa Penlop Chogyal Minjur Tempa, it replaced an earlier monastery and became the seat of governance for the Bumthang region. Legend has it that when the monastery was being built, a white bird flew up and settled on the site, indicating an auspicious location, hence the dzong’s name.
The dzong is a prominent landmark in Bumthang, with its imposing whitewashed walls and traditional Bhutanese architecture. It serves as both the administrative headquarters for the Bumthang district and a monastic body. The annual Jakar Tshechu, a vibrant religious festival, is held in its courtyard, drawing locals and visitors alike. Exploring Jakar Dzong offers a fascinating glimpse into Bhutanese history, administration, and spiritual life in central Bhutan.
