Dungkhar Lhakhang (Dungkar Nagtshang, Ancestral Home of the Royal Family)

Dungkhar Lhakhang, also known as Dungkar Nagtshang, is a significant temple and the ancestral home of Bhutan’s ruling Wangchuck dynasty, located in the remote Dungkhar valley of Lhuentse. It was built by Chöje Drukpa Kunga Gyaltsen in the mid-17th century, a descendant of the treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa, and holds immense historical and spiritual importance due to its direct connection to the royal lineage. It is from this region that the family of the first King, Ugyen Wangchuck, originated.

The temple complex includes monastic residences and various shrines, all set in a serene and verdant valley. Its remote location makes a visit a pilgrimage into the heart of Bhutan’s royal history and spiritual traditions. Dungkhar Lhakhang offers a profound glimpse into the origins of the Bhutanese monarchy and the spiritual heritage that continues to shape the nation.
