Drametse Lhakhang

Drametse Lhakhang is one of the most important and sacred Nyingmapa monasteries in eastern Bhutan, globally recognized as the origin of the famous “Drametse Ngacham” or “Drum Dance of Drametse,” a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Founded in 1511 by Khedrup Kuenga Gyaltshen, the grandson of the great Bhutanese terton Pema Lingpa, the monastery is strategically built on a flat hilltop overlooking the rolling hills of Mongar. Its name, “Drametse,” means “the peak where there is no enemy.”

The monastery houses significant sacred relics, including religious texts and ritual objects, and plays a crucial role in preserving the unique Nyingmapa traditions in Bhutan. The annual Drametse Ngacham festival is a vibrant spectacle performed by the monks, depicting the subjugation of evil spirits. Visiting Drametse Lhakhang offers a profound cultural and spiritual experience, connecting visitors to one of Bhutan’s most cherished traditional arts and its deep Buddhist heritage.
