Uncover the magic and mystery of beautiful Bhutan.
Pemagatshel Dzong, also known as Rigsum Goenpo Dzong, is a relatively new fortress for the district, completed in 1980. Unlike many older dzongs that were built in strategic defensive locations, Pemagatshel Dzong serves primarily as the administrative and monastic center for the district. It is situated on a hillside overlooking the valley, adhering to the traditional Bhutanese architectural style with its white-washed walls, intricate wooden windows, and multi-tiered roofs.
The dzong houses the district administration offices and a monastic body, playing a central role in the civic and spiritual life of Pemagatshel. Its serene courtyards provide a peaceful environment for daily monastic routines and local gatherings. Pemagatshel Dzong represents the modern continuity of Bhutan’s unique governance and religious systems, adapted to the needs of its remote eastern districts.
