Trashi Yangtse Dzong (Dongdi Dzong)

Trashi Yangtse Dzong, also known as Dongdi Dzong, is a relatively small but historically significant fortress located in the heart of Trashi Yangtse town. Originally built as a monastery in the 17th century by Pema Lingpa’s son, Tenpai Nyima, it was later converted into a dzong in the 19th century. Its strategic location allowed it to serve as both a religious and administrative center for the region.

The dzong’s architecture is characteristic of Bhutanese fortresses, with whitewashed walls and intricate woodwork. It houses several temples and administrative offices, and its courtyard is the venue for the annual Trashi Yangtse Tshechu, a vibrant religious festival. Visiting Trashi Yangtse Dzong offers a glimpse into the district’s history and its continuing role as a hub for both spiritual and civic life.
