Bjishong Dzong (Bhishong Dzong, Lingshi Dzong)

Bjishong Dzong, often referred to as Lingshi Dzong due to its proximity to Lingshi Village, is another ancient and strategically important fortress located in the northern reaches of Gasa District, on a ridge overlooking the Mo Chhu River. Believed to have been initially built by either Kuenga Wangpo, son of Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, or by the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 17th century, it served as a vital defense against Tibetan invasions from the north, particularly along the ancient trade route connecting Bhutan and Tibet.

Though less grand in scale than some other dzongs, Bjishong Dzong’s dramatic setting and historical significance are profound. It consists of a central tower (utse) and surrounding administrative and monastic structures. The dzong is not easily accessible by road, requiring a multi-day trek, typically as part of the popular Laya-Gasa or Snowman Trek. Its remote location adds to its mystique, offering trekkers a unique glimpse into Bhutan’s high-altitude defensive architecture and the rugged beauty of its northern frontiers.
