Motithang Takin Preserve

The Motithang Takin Preserve is a unique wildlife reserve located in the Motithang district of Thimphu, dedicated to the preservation of the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal. Originally a mini-zoo, it was converted into a preserve when it was observed that the Takin, a bizarre-looking animal with the head of a goat and the body of a cow, refused to inhabit the surrounding forest even when released. This decision reflects Bhutan’s compassionate Buddhist principles and its commitment to animal welfare.

The preserve offers visitors an excellent opportunity to observe these rare and intriguing creatures in a more natural, fenced environment. Beyond the Takin, the preserve is also home to other Himalayan species like the barking deer and sambar. It serves as a reminder of Bhutan’s rich biodiversity and its efforts to conserve its unique wildlife, making it a fascinating stop for nature enthusiasts and those curious about Bhutan’s distinctive national animal.
