National Memorial Chorten (Thimphu Chorten)

The National Memorial Chorten is an iconic Tibetan-style stupa, standing as one of the most prominent landmarks in Thimphu and serving as a vital focal point for daily worship for countless Bhutanese. Erected in 1974, this sacred monument was conceived in memory of the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who passed away in 1972. It is a revered site where pilgrims can be observed circumambulating clockwise, offering prayers and accumulating merit, while its exquisitely carved mandalas and statues beautifully depict Buddhist teachings.

This chorten is unique in that it does not enshrine human remains but rather serves as a symbol of the Buddha’s mind, making it a living spiritual sanctuary. The serene atmosphere invites both locals and visitors to engage in quiet contemplation and witness the deep devotion of the Bhutanese people. Its central location makes it easily accessible, providing a profound cultural and religious experience within the heart of the capital.
