Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey Valley)

Phobjikha Valley, often referred to as Gangtey Valley, is a vast U-shaped glacial valley situated in the remote central mountains of Bhutan, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and as the winter roosting ground for the critically endangered Black-necked Cranes. This pristine valley is one of the most important wildlife preserves in Bhutan, characterized by expansive grasslands, wetlands, and gentle slopes, making it a truly unique ecosystem.

The valley is also home to the Gangtey Monastery, a prominent Nyingmapa monastery, which sits majestically on a ridge overlooking the entire valley. Visitors can enjoy gentle hikes through the valley, observe the traditional rural life of the local inhabitants, and, during the winter months (October to March), witness the graceful Black-necked Cranes. The annual Black-necked Crane Festival, held in November, celebrates the arrival of these majestic birds and raises awareness for their conservation.
