Welcome to Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon! Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport (PBH), your local guide and driver will meet you. After a warm introduction, you will be transferred to Thimphu (2,350m), the captivating capital city, a scenic drive of about 1 hour. Along the way, you’ll stop at Chuzom, a confluence of rivers marked by three distinct stupas. After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is for leisure and acclimatization to the altitude. You can take a gentle walk around the city center or simply relax at the hotel, preparing for the adventures ahead. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
After breakfast, your adventure in Thimphu begins. You’ll drive to Kuenselphodrang Nature Park to visit the gigantic Buddha Dordenma statue (Buddha Point), which offers panoramic views of the Thimphu valley – a perfect vantage point to appreciate the landscape you’ll be exploring. For those interested, you can take a light mountain biking ride on the trails around Kuenselphodrang, offering a gentle introduction to Bhutanese biking (suitable for all levels). Alternatively, enjoy a scenic nature walk. In the afternoon, visit Tashichho Dzong, the impressive fortress that houses the government and monastic body, and then explore the National Memorial Chorten, a significant spiritual landmark.
After breakfast, embark on a picturesque drive to Punakha (1,250m), Bhutan’s former capital. The journey takes you over the dramatic Dochula Pass (3,100m), where on clear days, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas. Upon arrival in Punakha, prepare for an optional white water rafting experience on the Pho Chhu or Mo Chhu rivers (seasonal and weather-dependent; suitable for various skill levels). This exhilarating activity offers a unique perspective of the valley and its stunning landscapes. After your rafting adventure, explore the majestic Punakha Dzong (Pungthang Dechen Phodrang), arguably the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan, strategically situated at the confluence of two sacred rivers.
After breakfast, you’ll drive back towards Paro. Upon reaching Paro, check into your hotel. In the afternoon, you’ll embark on a pleasant hike to the Zuri Dzong or a similar viewpoint hike in the Paro Valley. This offers an excellent opportunity to stretch your legs and enjoy the valley’s serene beauty while offering fantastic panoramic views. The hike is typically moderate and provides a good warm-up for the Tiger’s Nest. After your hike, you’ll experience a rejuvenating traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath at a local farmhouse. This therapeutic soak, where hot river stones infuse mineral-rich water, is a perfect way to relax and soothe your muscles after your active day.
Today is the pinnacle of your adventure tour: the challenging yet incredibly rewarding pilgrimage to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) (3,120m). Perched precariously on a cliff face 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor, this sacred monastery is Bhutan’s most iconic and revered site. The hike to Taktsang is strenuous, involving steep ascents, but every step is rewarded with breathtaking views and a profound sense of accomplishment. You can walk, or opt for a pony ride for the first section (at an extra cost, arranged locally). Upon reaching the monastery, you’ll explore its various temples and prayer halls with your guide, soaking in the spiritual ambiance and incredible views. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon for a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Chele La Pass (3,988m), the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, situated between Paro and Haa valleys. The drive itself is an adventure, winding through lush forests and offering incredible panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Mount Jomolhari. At the pass, you can enjoy short walks, soak in the crisp mountain air, and appreciate the serene beauty of the alpine landscape. You’ll have ample opportunity for photography. In the afternoon, you might explore the town of Paro, visiting Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples, or Browse the local handicraft shops for souvenirs.
After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your departure, leaving Bhutan with exhilarating memories of its stunning landscapes and adventurous spirit.
