Welcome to Bhutan! Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport (PBH), your local guide and driver will warmly greet you. After a brief introduction, you’ll be transferred to Thimphu (2,350m), the captivating capital city, a scenic drive of approximately 1 hour. Along the way, you’ll pass Tamchog Lhakhang, a beautiful 15th-century temple. After hotel check-in and a short rest, your culinary adventure begins. This evening, you’ll dine at a local restaurant in Thimphu, designed to gently introduce your palate to Bhutanese cuisine with a selection of classic dishes, starting with milder flavors to prepare for the renowned chili-infused staples.
After breakfast, your day in Thimphu will begin with a visit to the Centenary Farmers Market (active from Wednesday to Monday) or a similar local produce market if it’s Tuesday. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere, observing local life and discovering a colorful array of fresh, organic vegetables, fruits, and traditional Bhutanese ingredients used in daily cooking. Following the market visit, you’ll participate in an engaging hands-on cooking class at a specialized culinary center or a local kitchen. Under the guidance of a Bhutanese chef, you’ll learn to prepare quintessential dishes like Ema Datshi (the national dish of chili and cheese), Kewa Datshi (potato and cheese), and perhaps even a traditional vegetable stir-fry. You’ll then enjoy the delicious meal you’ve prepared for lunch. In the afternoon, explore the Folk Heritage Museum to gain insights into traditional Bhutanese rural life and food preservation techniques. Later, you might visit a local spot to observe the preparation of Suja (Bhutanese butter tea) and experience its unique taste.
After breakfast, embark on a picturesque drive to Paro (2,250m). While it’s a relatively short drive, you’ll take a scenic route that may include a stop at the Dochula Pass (3,100m) if time and weather permit, offering stunning views of the Himalayas and the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens. Upon arrival in Paro, you’ll check into your hotel. The highlight of your afternoon will be a visit to a local Bhutanese Farmhouse. Here, you’ll experience genuine rural hospitality, enjoy a traditional farm-to-table lunch prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and gain insight into the daily lives of Bhutanese families. This offers an intimate culinary and cultural exchange. You’ll also have the option to indulge in a traditional hot stone bath at the farmhouse (optional, extra cost), a relaxing and therapeutic experience.
Today is dedicated to the pilgrimage to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) (3,120m). Perched precariously on a cliff face 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor, this sacred monastery is one of Bhutan’s most revered sites. The hike is challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering spiritual reflection and breathtaking views. You can choose to walk, ride a pony halfway (at an extra cost, arranged locally), or simply enjoy the magnificent views from the cafeteria. Upon returning to the valley, you’ll have some leisure time to relax. For your farewell dinner, you’ll dine at a local restaurant known for its authentic Bhutanese cuisine, providing an opportunity to savor your favorite dishes from the trip one last time, reflecting on your culinary adventures.
After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your departure, carrying with you the delicious flavors and cherished memories of Bhutan’s unique culinary landscape.
