Day 1 - Arrive Paro – Thimphu Transfer & Capital Exploration

Welcome to Bhutan, the land of the “Thunder Dragon”! Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport (PBH), your local guide and driver will meet you at the arrival hall. After a warm introduction, you’ll be transferred to Thimphu (2,350m), the captivating capital city of Bhutan. The scenic drive covers approximately 54 kilometers and takes about 1 hour. On the way, you’ll first encounter a private temple – Tschogang Lhakhang, the temple of the excellent horse. Continue driving to Thimphu, with a short stop at Chuzom, a confluence where the Paro Chhu and Wong Chhu rivers meet. It’s decorated with three different styles of stupas: Tibetan, Nepalese, and Bhutanese. After arriving in Thimphu, your guide will help you check in at the hotel, where you can take a short rest if needed. Later, you’ll visit Tashichho Dzong, the eminent fortress where the national government and central monastic body are located, and also the summer residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan. After that, you’ll head to visit the King’s Memorial Chorten (National Memorial Chorten), a stupa built in memory of the third king in 1974. The display inside shows good statues of tantric Buddhist and its philosophy.

Day 2 - Thimphu Discovery – Culture, Crafts & Views

After breakfast, embark on a full day of discovery in Thimphu. Your exploration begins with the Folk Heritage Museum, providing a fascinating glimpse into traditional Bhutanese rural life. Next, visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (School of 13 Arts and Crafts), where students learn traditional Bhutanese arts like painting, sculpture, embroidery, and thangka painting. Gain insights into the unique national animal of Bhutan at the Motithang Takin Preserve, home to the quirky Takin. Drive to Kuenselphodrang Nature Park to witness the colossal Buddha Dordenma statue (Buddha Point), one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, offering panoramic views of the Thimphu valley. In the afternoon, you might visit the National Textile Museum to appreciate Bhutan’s rich weaving heritage, or browse the vibrant Authentic Bhutanese Crafts Bazaar for unique souvenirs.

Day 3 - Thimphu to Punakha – Pass Views, Fertility Temple & Majestic Dzong

After breakfast, embark on a picturesque drive to Punakha (1,250m), Bhutan’s former capital. The route takes you over the dramatic Dochula Pass (3,100m). On clear days, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest peak, Gangkar Puensum. Here, you’ll also marvel at the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built by the Queen Mother. Upon arrival in Punakha, take a delightful walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous “Temple of Fertility” built by the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley. It’s a revered pilgrimage site, particularly for couples seeking blessings. Later, explore the majestic Punakha Dzong (Pungthang Dechen Phodrang), arguably the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan. Strategically situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Male River) and Mo Chhu (Female River), it served as the winter capital of Bhutan for centuries.

Day 4 - Punakha to Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley) – Crane Valley & Monastic Splendor

After breakfast, embark on a beautiful drive to the Phobjikha Valley (3,000m), a vast U-shaped glacial valley often referred to as the “Gangtey Valley” after its prominent monastery. This valley is renowned as the winter roosting ground for the endangered Black-Necked Cranes (mid-October to mid-February). Upon arrival, visit Gangtey Gompa, a significant 17th-century monastery and the largest Nyingmapa monastery in Bhutan. The monastery offers a serene atmosphere and commanding views of the valley. Spend the afternoon exploring the picturesque valley. You can take a gentle nature walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, observing the rural life and unique ecosystem. If it’s crane season, visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre.

Day 5 - Gangtey to Paro – Valley Return & Farm Experience

After a leisurely breakfast, begin your scenic drive back towards Paro. The route will take you over Pele La Pass (3,420m/11,220 ft), offering more stunning mountain vistas. The journey will offer diverse landscapes as you descend from the central highlands. Upon reaching Paro, check into your hotel. In the afternoon, you’ll visit a local Bhutanese Farmhouse to experience the traditional rural lifestyle and perhaps enjoy a traditional hot stone bath (optional, extra cost).

Day 6 - Paro – Tiger's Nest Monastery Hike

Today is dedicated to the pilgrimage to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) (3,120m/10,240 ft). Perched precariously on a cliff face 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor, this sacred monastery is one of Bhutan’s most revered sites. The hike is challenging but incredibly rewarding. You can walk, ride a pony halfway (at an extra cost, arranged locally), or simply enjoy the magnificent views from the cafeteria. Upon reaching the monastery, you’ll explore its various temples and prayer halls with your guide, soaking in the spiritual ambiance and incredible views. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon for a well-deserved rest.

Day 7 - Depart from Paro

After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your departure, carrying cherished memories of the Last Shangri-La.
