Welcome to Bhutan! Upon your arrival at Paro International Airport (PBH), you will be warmly greeted by your local guide and private driver. The flight into Paro offers spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks. After immigration formalities, you will be transferred to Thimphu (2,350m / 7,710 ft), the capital city, a scenic drive of approximately 1.5 hours. The rest of the day is for gentle acclimatization and settling into your hotel. You can take a leisurely stroll around the city center or visit the National Memorial Chorten, a significant stupa where locals circumambulate and offer prayers. This initial day in Thimphu helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Today is dedicated to further acclimatization and exploring the cultural highlights of Thimphu. You’ll visit the massive Buddha Dordenma statue perched on a hill, offering panoramic views of the Thimphu valley. Then, explore Tashichho Dzong, the impressive fortress that houses the government and monastic body. You might also visit the Folk Heritage Museum to understand traditional Bhutanese rural life. In the afternoon, your trekking guide will provide a detailed briefing on the Druk Path Trek, check your gear, and ensure you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead.
After an early breakfast, your trekking adventure begins! You’ll take a short drive from Thimphu to the starting point of your trek. The first day involves a gradual ascent through pine and rhododendron forests, often past yak herders’ camps. The path offers initial views of the Paro valley. You’ll pass by Jele Dzong (3,490m / 11,450 ft), an ancient fortress (mostly in ruins) with superb views. Your first campsite will be set up nearby, offering panoramic vistas.
Today’s trail ascends gradually along a ridge, offering increasingly stunning views of the Himalayan range, including Mount Jomolhari (7,326m) and other snow-capped peaks on clear days. You’ll trek through dense alpine vegetation, primarily rhododendron forests, which are particularly beautiful in spring when in bloom. The path is well-defined, and you’ll experience the serene wilderness of Bhutan. You’ll reach your campsite at Jangchupakha (3,770m / 12,370 ft), a beautiful clearing, after a rewarding day of hiking.
The trek continues with a mixture of ascents and descents today. You will traverse along mountain ridges and pass through vast meadows. The highlight of the day is reaching Jimilang Tsho (3,870m / 12,700 ft), a picturesque alpine lake known for its giant trout. The campsite is nestled by the serene lakeside, offering breathtaking views and a perfect spot for relaxation. Along this section, you might have the opportunity to spot herds of blue sheep, grazing on the high mountain slopes.
Today’s trek is diverse, involving crossing several ridges and passes, none of which require extreme climbs. You’ll trek past several other high-altitude lakes, including Janetsho and Simkotha Tsho, each offering its unique charm. The trail provides continuous panoramic views of the entire Himalayan range. You’ll eventually reach Phajoding Monastery (3,750m / 12,300 ft), a sacred monastic complex perched above Thimphu. Your campsite will be near the monastery, offering a stunning vista of Thimphu city twinkling far below at night.
This is the final day of your rewarding Druk Path trek. After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent towards Thimphu. The trail is mostly downhill, winding through beautiful blue pine and spruce forests. As you descend, you’ll get increasingly closer views of Thimphu Valley. Upon reaching the road head near Motithang in Thimphu (approx. 2,640m / 8,661 ft), your vehicle will be waiting to pick you up. After a moment to freshen up and bid farewell to your trekking crew, you will be transferred directly to Paro International Airport (PBH) (approx. 1.5 hours drive) for your departure, carrying unforgettable memories of your Bhutanese trekking adventure.
